Best Seasons for Manaslu Circuit Trekking:

From March to May and September till early November months during springtime’s as well on autumn/fall seasons.

March to May pleasant walks with much sunshine and enough daylights for views of snow-capped peaks, this is the time in spring when wild-flowers are in full bloom especially rhododendron of various species from trees to bushes with other bright flowers, makes this trek more interesting and exciting.

During spring times, days are clear from morning till late afternoon, can get cloudy sometimes with chances of snow on high elevation, morning and night times much cold where temperatures drop.

September to early November during autumn/fall season most days are crystal clear from morning till afternoon but short daylights due to autumn and much colder in the morning and night times as well in shades, chances of snow-fall sometimes.

Introduction:

Manaslu Circuit Trekking, an adventure that takes you around high and remote areas of the upper Gorkha district within Nepal Mid-West. A scenic and beautiful country where walk covers North and South of the world 8th high Mt. Manaslu range, that towers high above 8, 163 m and 26, 781 feet high.

Manaslu Mountain with its satellite peaks Boudha and Himal-Chuli, located in between Ganesh Himal towards the east with Lamjung and Annapurna Himalaya in the west direction.

Manaslu Circuit Trek follows the Old Trans Himalaya Salt Trade Route of Nepal and Tibet / China for some days that extends beyond high Manaslu scenic valley from the main villages of Sama-Gaon and Samdu.

Truly a marvelous, full of delightful and exciting moments facing constant views of high snow mountain on daily walks that covers approx.  

Mt. Manaslu Circuit trek, covers approx. 165 k.m or 102 miles distance within a two-week duration from the starting point Machha-Khola to the end of the trek at Dharapani village.

Adventure begins on reaching Maccha-Khola a rural farm village situated in the district of Gorkha close to the main town Arughat after a long exciting drive from Kathmandu.

Walk follows the raging Bhuri-Gandaki River upstream most of the way to its near glacial source at Sama-Gaon and Phedi, the base of high Larke-La pass where Gorkha district and Manaslu valley ends.

As trek progress entering into a river gorge and scenic valleys to reach Jagat and Philim a lovely farm villages with well-tended farm fields and terraces growing wheat and millets.

From Jagat onwards landscapes changes along with cooler temperatures on reaching high Himalayan hills covered in tall rhododendron, blue pine, and fir tree lines and then reach scenic Manaslu valley, enclosed by an array of White Mountain range. 

The word Manaslu comes from the ancient Hindu Sanskrit word means ‘Manas’ as mind and soul of a god and holy spirits, like sacred Lake Manasarover in South West Tibet near Mt. Kailash. 

For local native Manaslu villagers know by the name ‘Kutang’ meaning a paradise land comes from Tibetan origin language, as high Manaslu tribe migrated from Southern Tibet past hundreds of centuries.

Where trade and bartering still takes place between local Manaslu villages and Tibetans across the border, but in smaller ways than it used to be in the good old days till the early 1970’s.

Manaslu valley was closed for outside visitors and remains as a restricted region, the area then re-opened for trekkers and mountaineers since the late 1980’s on paying extra fees for the permits. To enter into this amazing scenic Manaslu high valley from Jagat village onwards.  

On reaching high Manaslu valley where all trekkers feel delighted walking within picturesque scenery of snow peaks that surround the valley, walk is much easier on a pleasant winding path with short ups and downs.

As adventure enters amidst wide Manaslu valley, tall tree lines and lush green vegetation disappears for dry and barren landscapes and yet beautiful walking into nice lovely villages of Namrung, Lo, and Sama-Gaon.  

From here onward you can notice impressive villages adorned with Buddhism monuments and colorful prayer flags, rows of stone walls in the backdrop of towering Manaslu mountains.

Spending extra days in Sama-Gaon for acclimatization as well to explore around lovely cultural villages and monasteries, from here head towards the end of Manaslu valley at Dharmasala / Larke Phedi on the bottom of high Larke-La Pass.

Next early morning a big haul with steep climb on rocky slopes and glaciers to reach atop the highest point of the adventure, located above 5, 106 m / 16,752 feet high the pass marked with thousands of prayer flags with a signboard with names and height of the pass.

Enjoy spectacular panorama of Manaslu Himalaya, Ganesh, and Annapurna mountain range with close views of Himlung and Larke peaks, after a wonderful moment a long descend takes you down back into beautiful forest of tall pine and rhododendron trees within Manang areas, after being in Gorkha district.

After a tough day crossing over Larke-La, from Bhimthang on easy downhill to Dharapani village where our marvelous walk completes, Dharapani village located above Masrsyangdi River and on the junction of the Manaslu and Annapurna Circuit route.

Enjoy last overnight halt on the high hills of Manaslu and Annapurna Himalaya region, next early morning an exciting drive to Kathmandu, after a great adventure on Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Day to Day Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu airport 1,320 m transfer to hotel.
Reach Kathmandu via various international airlines where our staff receives you with transport to the hotel in the heart of Kathmandu city within easy reach to its shops and restaurants. Check into your rooms and after getting refreshed from jet-lag join at the hotel lobby for group briefing regarding dos and don’ts, local culture and with detail information on Manaslu Circuit trekking. Evening enjoy group dinner in a nice authentic Nepalese restaurants and get the taste of local cuisine with folk cultural shows of various parts of Nepal.

In Kathmandu sightseeing tour and trek preparation.
In Kathmandu full day for optional sightseeing tour at places of great interest, as Kathmandu and adjoining cities steeped with World Heritage Sites, on this day with time for trek preparation.

Drive to Machha-Khola 925 m via Arughat town 710 - 07 hrs.
Start the adventure with an early morning drive heading Mid-West from Kathmandu to reach the starting point of the trek at Maccha-Khola around the district of Gorkha. Overland journey takes you past farm villages, towns, and nice tended terraced fields, to reach a wide area within cultivated terrace around Arughat town. Drive continues further north following Burigandaki River upstream past Soti-Khola and Lapbesi village to sandy riverbed following a trail that meanders below a steep, craggy valley side. As the road climb towards Machha Khola for an overnight stop, a village with many teashops and a small lodge, Maccha Khola means a Fish Stream.

Trek to Doban 1,070 m via Tatopani (Hot Spring) - 06 hrs.
From here on vegetation changes slowly as altitude gains, as morning walk takes you over a stream where Machha Khola (Fish Stream) name comes from, as the route head upstream to Khola-Bensi village and at Tatopani a place with a natural 'hot spring'. The walk continues as the valley turns into narrow and steep, and then the trail reach to cross a suspension bridge, after a short period of walk entering a patch of forest and then reaching at Doban located on the high shelf of Burigandaki River.

Trek to Jagat 1,345 m - 05 hrs.
Morning start walk-on wide gravel field near Lauri stream cross over a suspension bridge and climb to high ridge to descend into a valley around Yara Khola (stream), walk for another hour to reach at Jagat. Jagat, nice and interesting farm village a moderate size; where one can witness people of various mixed tribes from Magar, Gurung, Chettries, Brahman, to Manaslu Bhotia (Tibetan looking tribes) with some Newar people, who runs lodge and shops.

Trek to Deng 2,130 m via Philim 1,570 m - 06 hrs.
From Jagat descend to a river and then climb on terraced hillsides of Saguleri, with a view of Sringi Himal 7,187m, as walk continue with ups and down trail then reach a bridge over Buri-Gandaki. After crossing trail winds up to reach at Philim village for a short break and observe this nice farm village with rich cultivated fields and terraces. After a refreshing stop walk lead higher past scattered farm villages with climb through terraces of golden fields of wheat’s and barley, to reach a rocky ridge top covered within bamboo forest area towards Eklai Bhatti means a lonely Inn. After a short rest walk to a higher region within upper Manaslu, where route diverts North West to reach our overnight stop at Deng a small nice village with more of Tibetan culture.

Trek to Bihe 1,990 m -06 hrs.
Morning walks lead to high cliff walls, after walking past dramatic section continue trek around farm village, where houses and terrains dramatically changes into strong Tibetan traditional Houses of strong Buddhism religion, after few hours reaching at Bihe, a small village for overnight stop, here people are more of Tibetan origin and Buddhist religion. Villagers raise buckwheat, wheat, barley, and potatoes as staple crops, since trekking gain popular around the area, spinach, carrots, and cabbages are also grown.

Trek to Namrung 2,630 m - 05 hrs.
From Bihe heading within much cooler region, as morning walk continues for another two hours to a steep-sided, scenic valley, coming across rows of Mani prayer stone walls as walk leads to Ghap a nice village for a possible lunch stop. After Ghap altitude gains heading into alpine woodland as the path meander to steep climb to enter a wide and open valley with extensive pasture field, then crossing a large stream flowing from the glacier of Lidana. On walks view of Manaslu, Pang Phuchin 6,335 m, Saula Himal 6,235 m with many unnamed peaks of above 6,000 m. From here climb as altitude gains to reach at Namrung for an overnight stop, the village also called as Sho Namru.

Trek to Lo-Gaon 3,180 m - 05 hrs.
After Namrung, walk into spread out farm fields within Yak herder camps within beautiful Manaslu valley, from here walk leads to a high and scenic valley to Lo Gaon a nice village for overnight stop. One of the attractive villages around the Manaslu region, at Lo, enjoys the closest views of Mt. Manaslu North Face, at Lo village visit its monastery with decorated with many Chorten and Mani walls facing views of Ganesh Himal towards the east.

Trek to Sama-Gaon 3,530 m -05 hrs.
From Lo-Gaon walk is pleasant with a slow climb facing views of Peak 29 and Manaslu, after few hours reach at Shala village enjoy looking peaks of Phungi, Manaslu, and Himal Chuli. Walk for a few hours from here and then end the day at Sama-Gaon village, with views of Mt. Manaslu. Sama-Gaon, the largest village of Upper Manaslu, here natives are mostly farmers cultivating buckwheat, barley which are major crops in this high altitude country, with potatoes and seasonal vegetables are also grown. Villagers of Manaslu valley settled from South West Tibet past 400 years the custom and culture of impressive Buddhist religion of old heritage similar to Tibetan predecessor. The villagers still trade and barter with Tibet taking a day to reach the frontier of Nepal and Tibet, which was once an active Trans Himalayan Salt Trade route between two countries.

At Sama-Gaon rest day for acclimatization and local excursion.
Today a free day for acclimatization before heading high towards Larke-La pass, with time to explore around Sama-Gaon, witness the villages and houses of typical Tibetan style and heritage and visit the old Monastery.

Trek to Samdo 3,690 m - 05 hrs.
After time and rest at Sama-Gaon, walk today takes you to the last village of Gorkha and Manaslu valley at Samdo, morning a slow climb as elevation gains heading barren country, taking slowly with a short break to enjoy the surrounding beautiful views. The walk continues then reach Samdo village, the last village of the region, a moderate size village with more than fifty houses where nearly two hundred villagers live around this high harsh, and dry country.

Trek to Larke Phedi / Dharama-Sala 4,470 m - 04 hrs.
On leaving Samdo village, the walk continues towards the far end rim of Manaslu valley with grand views of snow-capped peaks that includes Mt. Manaslu, walk and cross icy streams to reach on the base of the pass at Larke Phedi means bottom of pass, also called Dharma-Sala (traveler’s rest house/shade). At Larke Phedi afternoon free for short walks and preparations for next early morning long climb to cross over high Larke-La pass towards Manang area.

Cross Larke La 5,160 m and descend to Bhimthang 3,790 m -08 hrs.
After rest and overnight at Larke Phedi, early morning start up-hill past few huts of Dharmasala, walk over moraine of rocks and boulders and past ablation of north Larke glacier, facing views of Cho Danda with Larke Peak, as walk continues with gradual climb to reach on top Larke-la festooned with thousands of colorful Buddhist prayer flags. From the top excellent panorama of Himlung, Cheo Himal, Kang Guru and Annapurna II includes series of Manaslu peaks, and then long descend to a valley called Larcia, and walk further for another hour on moraine ridge to Tambuche at 3, 900 m, at the bottom of a pass, from here short walk to Bhimthang for overnight stop after a long, hard climb. Bhimthang a beautiful spot located on a wide green valley with several lodges adorned with prayer Mani walls, the area surrounded by green tall trees of rhododendron-pines and oaks.

Trek to Gho 2,760 m - 05 hrs.
From Bhimthang rest of the journey on a downhill with few short climb to reach at Gho and Dharapani, as morning walk starts facing views of peaks on a gradual path into dense woodland. Finally, day completes reaching a small clearing amid woodland at Gho for overnight stop, a small cattle and yak herders summer pasture a temporary settlement with few small lodge.

Trek to Dharapani 1,725 m -05 hrs.
Enjoy the last day walk of the adventure as morning heads on a nice, pleasant trail downhill within the cool shade of the forest to Teje, a lovely village, located by the raging Masrsyangdi River, from here short last climb to another nice and large village at Dharapani. A large spread-out village located on the junction of popular Annapurna Circuit trail and Manaslu route, Dharapani situated in a river gorge within lovely tree lines where motor has reached since the last few years, this village offers excellent lodges for travelers.

Drive to Kathmandu via Besisar town 780 m -07 hrs.
Today another long hour drive to reach lower warmer farm country, as morning drive takes you for few hours further down around Lamjung area within warm farm areas, as drive heads on winding downhill to Syange then at Besisar, the headquarter town of Lamjung district. From here on drive continues on good road towards Dumre on the main Pokhara and Kathmandu highway, a lovely drive with views of Himalayan peaks after a brief stop on the route, and then finally reach into hustle and bustle city life of Kathmandu. Check into your hotels, rest of the evening at leisure with a group farewell dinner in a nice Nepalese restaurant with Folk culture programs to entertain you.
