Best Seasons for Tsum Valley Trekking:

From March to May and September till early November months during springtime’s as well on autumn/fall seasons.

March to May pleasant walks with much sunshine and enough daylights for views of snow-capped peaks, this is the time in spring when wild-flowers are in full bloom especially rhododendron of various species from trees to bushes with other bright flowers, makes this trek more interesting and exciting.

During spring times, days are clear from morning till late afternoon, can get cloudy sometimes with chances of snow on high elevation, morning and night times much cold where temperatures drop.

September to early November during autumn/fall season most days are crystal clear from morning till afternoon but short daylights due to autumn and much colder in the morning and night times as well in shades, chances of snow-fall sometimes.

Tsum Valley trekking, an adventure around most remote pockets of Nepal Mid-West Himalaya, and beyond massif Manaslu mountain range and Ganesh Himal. 

A journey of a lifetime experience into pure wilderness, takes you into medvial time of happy and simple living, and away from modernization.

Trekkers will be amazed exploring Tsum valley and farm villages, where people live the life as it were for hundreds of centuries back, within the harmony of peaceful environment in a world of its own.

Truly a fascinating and exciting destination to explore the far corners of Gorkha district in between giant peaks, where few group of trekkers and explorer hardly venture into this unknown pristine surroundings.

Tsum area known as the ‘Valley of Happiness’ as translated from ancient Tibetan language ‘Beyul Kyimolung’. An amazing country to visit, and to feel the fresh environment and its happy people living in peaceful harmony with the nature.

Tsum Valley, a forbidden country for outside travelers since past decades that has been recently opened for foreign visitors since end of 1990’s, and still remains as restricted region of Nepal Far North Mid-West.

Where trekkers can enter on obtaining special permits to enter into beautiful Tsum Valley, an extra fee levied to control mass flow of trekkers and to preserve the area into pristine form as it were since past many centuries.

The main highlight of Tsum Valley its rawness, unspoiled country and well hidden from rest of the world a true Shangri-La enclosed by array of towering giant peaks, which falls on an ancient ‘Trans Himalaya Salt Trade and Caravan Route’ to Tibet.

Flourishing trade used to take place across the border of Nepal and Tibet till early 1960’s, before Tibet was annexed with mainland China, the trade and bartering still exist at present but in smaller ways.

Tsum Valley trek begins with exciting and interesting long drive to reach at Machha-Khola around Gorkha district situated Nepal Mid-West within low warm and heavily farmed area.

Walk follows Buri-Gandaki River upstream for some days on the same main trails of Manaslu circuit, as route leads to foot hills within nice farm villages of Doban and Jagat, populated with mixed tribes of hill people.

Adventure progress on leaving green mid hills covered with tall rhododendron, oaks, pines and fir tree lines, as our route branches off from the main Manaslu trail to head further North East.

Trek finally enters remote and well hidden corners of upper Gorkha district around most isolated region of Nepal Far Mid-West Himalaya within complete tranquil wilderness and a true Shangri-La.

Enjoy visiting nice lovely villages of Tsum adorned with age-old heritage life style of farming and raising livestock interwoven with Buddhism religion and similar interesting culture that matches with Tibetans ancestors.  

Adventure takes you to barren and windswept country past nice village Choka-Paro, Nyle to reach our final destination at Mu-Gompa as well the highest spot of the trek at 3, 700 m / 12,139 feet high.

Mu Gompa, situated on the far corners from main villages of Tsum on rest day with time to explore around marvelous surroundings with amazing scenery of rolling hills that towers above Mu Gompa, with high snow-capped peaks.

After an enjoyable and impressive time at Mu Gompa the monastery of great interesting interior treasured with ancient idols and colorful religious arts, then heading back to Machha-Khola for last final overnight stop around Nepal Far Mid-West.

An early morning an interesting scenic drive brings you back into civilization within hustle and bustle city life in Kathmandu, after a great marvelous experience on Tsum Valley Trekking.

Day 01: On arrival at Kathmandu airport 1,320 m then transfer to the hotel.

Day 02: In Kathmandu sightseeing tour and trek preparation.

Day 03: Drive to Machha-Khola 925 m via Arughat town 710 - 07 hrs. 

Day 04: Trek to Doban 1,070 m via Tatopani (Hot Spring) - 05 hrs.

Day 05: Trek to Jagat 1,345 - 05 hrs.

Day 06: Trek to Lokpa 2,240 m- 06 hrs.

Day 07: Trek to Chokan-Paro 3, 031 m-05 hrs.

Day 08:  Trek to Nyle 3,347 m - 05 hrs.

Day 09:  Trek to Mu Gompa 3, 700 m/ 12,139 ft- 04 hrs.

Day 10:  At Mu-Gompa Rest Day for local visit and exploration.

Day to Day Itinerary

On arrival at Kathmandu airport 1,320 m transfer to hotel.
Reach Kathmandu via various international airlines where our staff receives you with transport to the hotel in the heart of Kathmandu city within easy reach to its shops and restaurants. Check into your rooms and after getting refreshed from jet-lag join at the hotel lobby for group briefing regarding dos and don’ts, local culture and with detail information on Tsum Valley trekking. Evening enjoy group dinner in a nice authentic Nepalese restaurants and get the taste of local cuisine with folk cultural shows of various parts of Nepal.

In Kathmandu sightseeing tour and trek preparation.
In Kathmandu full day for optional sightseeing tour at places of great interest, as Kathmandu and adjoining cities steeped with World Heritage Sites, on this day with time for trek preparation.

Drive to Machha-Khola 925 m via Arughat town 710 - 07 hrs.
Start the adventure with an early morning drive heading Mid-West from Kathmandu to reach the starting point of the trek at Maccha-Khola around the district of Gorkha. Overland journey takes you past farm villages, towns, and nice tended terraced fields, to reach a wide area within cultivated terrace around Arughat town. Drive continues further north following Burigandaki River upstream past Soti-Khola and Lapbesi village to sandy riverbed following a trail that meanders below a steep, craggy valley side. As the road climb towards Machha Khola for an overnight stop, a village with many teashops and a small lodge, Maccha Khola means a Fish Stream.

Trek to Doban 1,070 m via Tatopani (Hot Spring) - 06 hrs.
From here on vegetation changes slowly as altitude gains, as morning walk takes you over a stream where Machha Khola (Fish Stream) name comes from, as the route head upstream to Khola-Bensi village and at Tatopani a place with a natural 'hot spring'. The walk continues as the valley turns into narrow and steep, and then the trail reach to cross a suspension bridge, after a short period of walk entering a patch of forest and then reaching at Doban located on the high shelf of Burigandaki River.

Trek to Jagat 1,345 m - 05 hrs.
Morning start walk-on wide gravel field near Lauri stream cross over a suspension bridge and climb to high ridge to descend into a valley around Yara Khola (stream), walk for another hour to reach at Jagat. Jagat, nice and interesting farm village a moderate size; where one can witness people of various mixed tribes from Magar, Gurung, Chettries, Brahman, to Manaslu Bhotia (Tibetan looking tribes) with some Newar people, who runs lodge and shops.

Trek to Lokpa 2,240 m via Philim 1,570 m - 06 hrs.
From Jagat descend to a river and then climb on terraced hillsides of Saguleri, with a view of Sringi Himal 7, 187 m, as walk continue with ups and down trail then reach a bridge over Buri-Gandaki. After crossing trail winds up to reach at Philim village for a short break and observe this nice farm village with rich cultivated fields and terraces. After a refreshing stop walk lead higher past scattered farm villages with climb through terraces of golden fields of wheat’s and barley, to reach a rocky ridge top covered within bamboo forest area towards Eklai Bhatti means a lonely Inn. After a short rest walk to a higher region, where route diverts North East to reach our overnight stop at Lokpa past Deng, a small nice village with more of Tibetan culture.

Trek to Chokan-Paro 3,031 m- 05 hrs.
From here onward enter new fresh country and away from main trekking trails of Manaslu as walk leads towards Tsum in the valley of happiness. Walk further past farm lands and smaller villages facing views of Ganesh and Manaslu Himal, as walk ends on reaching a nice village at Chumling for overnight halt.

Trek to Nyle 3,347 m - 05 hrs.
Here onward walk into beautiful Tsum valley, morning takes you towards high area to Nyle village around open and exposed wide valley, a dramatic dry and windswept terrain with similar landscapes like Tibet plateau. Entering into a country where tree lines fades for short juniper and willow trees, as journey continues overlooking views of Ganesh and Manaslu Himal range of peaks. Finally completing our day-walk reaching at Nyle village where you can explore a meditation cave of great Buddhist saint ‘Guru Millerepa’ of 11th century, he was a poet, singer and a high tantric guru where his folk stories and words of wisdom with songs are still remembered by Tibetans and followers of Millerepa.

Trek to Mu Gompa 3, 700 m/ 12,139 ft- 04 hrs.
Today a short walk to reach at the end our trip at Tsum Valley reaching Mu Gompa, with an old impressive monastery, walk leads to a climb within high, dry exposed terrain with views of high peaks then slowly walk ends on reaching at Mu Gompa for overnight stop.

At Mu-Gompa Rest Day for local visit and exploration.
At Mu Gompa rest day to explore around this marvelous country and visit its impressive ancient monastery, enriched with treasures of antique idols, statue and religious relics. Rest of the day take a short hike to view point for stunning panorama of nearby peaks.

Trek to Rachen-Gompa 3,240 m - 05 hrs.
After an interesting and exciting moment around high Tsum valley, walk heads to visit Rachen Gumpa, as walk follows on gradual trail with short few ups and downs with panorama of snow capped peaks, heading into yak grazing summer pasture to reach at Rachen Gompa and its moderate size village for overnight stop.

Trek to Chumling 2,386 m-05 hrs.
Return journey having wonderful time at high Tsum valley, where walk leads towards lower areas to Chumling where our route gets back into tall tree lines within green vegetation at Chumling village, for last and final overnight in Tsum Valley area.

Trek to Jagat 1,345 m- 06 hrs.
From here retrace journey back to Lokpa to join on the main Manaslu trekking route, as walk leads further down leaving behind Tsum valley, head further south reaching much warmer farm village at Philim, and then at Jagat village for overnight stop.

Trek to Tatopani 890 m - 05 hrs.
After a lovely overnight at Jagat village, morning walk follows Buri-Gandaki Rriver downstream, with long descend to reach lower warmer area at Tatopani, a village with natural fresh hot-spring, enjoy refreshing moments on natural hot-spring with time to explore around the farm villages.

Trek to Maccha-Khola - 05 hrs.
From Tatopani with refreshing time our last day trek continues to near level path following river downstream encountering many farm villages and into patch of forest of oaks and Sal trees to reach our last overnight stop and then ending the walk at Maccha-Khola village.

Drive to Kathmandu via Arughat town-07 hrs.
Today another long hour drive to reach lower warmer farm country, as morning drive takes you for few hours further down around Lamjung area within warm farm areas, as drive heads on winding downhill to Soti Khola then at Arughat town. From here on drive continues on good road towards main Pokhara and Kathmandu highway, a lovely drive with views of Himalayan peaks after a brief stop on the route, and then finally reach into hustle and bustle city life of Kathmandu. Check into your hotels, rest of the evening at leisure with a group farewell dinner in a nice Nepalese restaurant with Folk culture programs to entertain you.
