Best Seasons for Rara Lake Journey:
The best time from March to May months with September to November, during springtime when wildflowers are in full blooming season with various species rhododendron from tall trees to bushes, makes the hills alive with spectacular wild-flower. Morning and night much cold but enough sunlight hours.
Walk will be more enjoyable in spring with fine good weather for views and pleasant walks, chances of snowfall sometimes around the higher region of Rara Lake.
Next good time in autumn/fall from September to November, although much cold but days are bright and clear for views and pleasant walks. Days are fine but short sunlight hours can expect snow sometimes due to the autumn and fall season.

The direct air distance from Kathmandu to Rara Lake is 371 km, but takes about a week to reach the area by overland journey, the shortest means by air-flights with transit at Nepalgunj city airport, which is on the Far South West around the low sub-tropical climatic zone close to India border.

Rara Lake Journey starts from the capital city in Kathmandu, where scenic flight takes you to Nepal Far South West around low warm areas at Nepalgunj city, and then flying towards cooler Himalayan hills.
Where small aircraft land at Talcha airstrip the nearest airport of Rara National Park and the Lake, located at Mugu district of Far West Nepal, and then head towards beautiful Rara Lake.
Walk begins heading through several widespread farmland and smaller rural villages and then enter into a cool forest lined with blue pine, black juniper, West Himalayan spruce, oak, Himalayan cypress and other associated species.
At about 3,350 m, pine and spruce give away to fir, oak, and birch with deciduous tree species like Indian horse-chestnut, walnut and Himalayan poplars as climb reaches on the highest spot of the journey at Murma Hill Top above 3,780 m.
Enjoy fantastic panorama from this high hill in the comfort of a nice cozy lodge, and then reach the main highlight of the journey at scenic Rara Lake, surrounded by green rolling hills and with distant high snow-capped peaks.
Explore the beautiful areas encircled by green coniferous and deciduous forest and then slowly our adventure comes to an end with a return journey back at Talcha town for an exciting flight back to Kathmandu, after a memorable experience on Rara Lake Journey.
Outline Itinerary:
Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu airport 1,320 m and transfer to the hotel.
Day 02: In Kathmandu morning free, afternoon fly to Nepalgunj transfer to Hotel.
Day 03: Fly to Talcha 2,260 m with overnight stops in local lodge.
Day 04: Walk to Murma Hill Top 3,780 m- 05 hrs.
Day 05: Hike to Rara Lake 2,990 m - 04 hrs.
Day 06: Morning at Rara Lake enjoy views and walk to Murma Hill.
Day 07: Hike to Talcha town- 04 hrs.
Day 08: Fly from Talcha to Kathmandu via Nepalgunj.
Day 09: In Kathmandu spare and reserve as a contingency day.
Day 10: Depart Nepal for international departure homeward bound.
Taking an overland journey to Rara Lake:
A long driving journey from Kathmandu to reach Nepalgunj and then head towards far north to reach at Mugu district on four wheels either taking a Jeep or local Bus to reach Talcha town village, located on the outskirt of Rara National Park and the Lake:
Drive from Nepalgunj the itinerary days as follows:
Day 01: Fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj drive to Surkhet transfer to the hotel.
Day 02: Drive to Kalikot, Manma with district headquarters via Dailekh.
Day 03: Drive to Talcha or at Gamdadhi Bazaar.
Day 04: Drive to Rara boundary at Milichaur and walk to Murmatop-04 hrs.
Day 05: Spend the day at Rara with marvelous times.
Day 06-8: Back to Kathmandu on the same route or taking flight from Talcha or
Nepalgunj airport.
